A TERECoP course by ASPETE in Athens
23 trainees (4 teachers of primary education and 11 of secondary education and 8 postgraduate students) attended the teacher training course “integration of the programmable robotic constructions (Lego Mindstorms NXT) in school education” organized in the premises of ASPETE in Athens, Greece. The course had a duration of 30 training hours in the period of April-May 2008 in the framework of the SOCRATES / COMENIUS project “Teacher Education on Robotics-Enhanced Constructivist Pedagogical Methods - TERECoP” and was designed by the TERECoP partnership.
The course included the following main topics
- Costructivism, constructionism, project-based learning
- Robotics as learning object
- Robotics as learning tool
The course was taught by 4 trainers (Alimisis D., Frangou S., Kynigos C and Papanikolaou S.) mainly through laboratory activities including the development of robotics-enhanced projects by the trainees working in groups
The course was organized in 5 face to face meetings of 6 teaching periods each (5x6=30 teaching periods in total) during 3 Fridays/Saturdays afternoons.) During the course, trainees worked in a constructionist learning environment since they were actively engaged in activities, working in teams with peers. To enhance the sense of community and promote collaboration through the course an e-class was maintained.
In particular, the training course was organised in five (5) meetings that each one lasted for 6 teaching periods:
- Building a ‘didactic contract’: introduction to the course and to the theoretical context aiming to agree on a “didactic contract”
- Robotics as a learning object I: Robotics as a learning object focusing on materials
- Robotics as a learning object II: Robotics as a learning object focusing on the programming environment
- Designing robotics-enhanced projects/activities: Designing robotics-enhanced projects/activities focusing on the methodology for designing robotics-enhanced activities proposed in TERECoP
- Trainees’ projects presentation and evaluation: Trainees’ projects and course evaluation based on questionnaires and interviews.
